Grŵp Gwalia Cyf provides high quality social housing and care services for a broad and diverse range of people in the community and is renowned for its innovative approaches and high standards in architectural design, building conservation and environmental commitment. Ty Tom Jones Swansea Foyer offers young homeless people access to affordable, safe accommodation, education, training, employment and volunteering opportunities in a holistic person-centred way. This award-winning project was established in a former Working Men's Club. Conserving its listed 19th century façade, while providing a modern, environmentally-friendly building behind with flats, training rooms, offices and recreational facilities built around a central ‘street’ communal space. The environmental features include solar panels (producing hot water and electricity), devices to conserve water and energy, and high levels of insulation. The Llys Glas development, in the Old Central Police Station on the opposite side of the Alexandra Road, is a multifunctional creative community hub with student accommodation, an arts venue with exhibition space, several office units, function rooms for hire, and the Tapestri Cafe Bar which serves Fairtrade coffee and locally sourced products where possible. The café bar is run as a social enterprise providing young people with skills, training and experiences needed for a career in catering. |
