Local Produce
All stages in the production and distribution of food and drink can have a huge impact on our environment. Intense farming in many countries has led to degradation of the land through erosion, pollution and loss of wildlife habitats. Intense fishing has brought many species near to extinction. Transportation of food across the world contributes significantly to pollution.
Thankfully, in Swansea we do have a choice – there are many opportunities to buy local products and to find out how to grow our own food.

The Penclawdd Local Produce and Craft Market is just one of several regular local produce markets where a selection of cheeses, bread, pastries, meats and vegetables from local suppliers are available. The craft market includes woodturning, glassware, candles, plants and jewellery. Mumbles Development Trust also organises a monthly produce market. |
Swansea Indoor Market has many traders selling a wide variety of fresh, local produce including Gower fruit and vegetables, cockles and laverbread, and Welsh cakes straight off the griddle. There are also specialist butchers sourcing their produce from their own farms or farms within the area, and, as might be expected so close to the sea, there’s never a shortage of fresh fish.
Supporting the small scale traders in such markets helps to support the local economy and retain a vibrant part of Swansea's heritage. |
Swansea Community Farm has an allotment area where local people can learn how to grow their own organic fruit, herbs and vegetables. |
