Global links

We live in a world where almost everyone is linked by trade, the media and a shared environment and we have become increasingly dependent on people from across the globe for the food we eat and the goods we use. The impacts of pollution and environmental degradation, whether it occurs close to home or far away, can have an impact on our health and livelihood and the way we live and the decisions we make everyday can affect people from all parts of the world.

An important aspect of sustainability is the understanding, respect and care that individuals and communities develop for one another. A sustainable world is one that is fair and just. Buying fair trade products ensures that producers in poor countries receive a fair and stable price or wage for their goods.

Gors Community School has established links with schools and projects in several parts of the world including Sweden, Poland, Italy, Germany, India and Indonesia. There are nine languages spoken by the pupils (in additional to English and Welsh) and thirteen different countries are represented in the school. A high priority is therefore placed on developing an understanding and respect for other faiths and cultures and celebrating the diversity within the school. Each year the school holds an International Week where every class "becomes" a different country for the week. They learn how to say some words in the language of that country, try on their national costume, sing national songs, try local food and find out all they can about what it's like living there.

Oxfam is a leading aid and development charity which works with partners across the world to tackle poverty, improve health provision and promote sustainable development. Its local shops raise funds for its work in the UK and across the world, providing information and organising activities to get people involved in the charity’s campaigns. The Union Street branch sells a good range of Fairtrade food and gifts.

Red Cafe serves Fairtrade food and drink and offers educational activities for schools and community groups on fair trade and global citizenship issues.
