All stages of the production and distribution of food and drink have a huge impact on our environment. Intense farming in many countries has led to degradation of the land through erosion, pollution and loss of wildlife habitats.
Intense fishing has brought many species near to extinction. Transportation of food across the world is causing pollution. It's not all doom and gloom because we do have a choice. Several organisations in Swansea are already leading the way...

On the Trail...
Local Food
Local produce can be found at markets in Penclawdd and Mumbles. Produce such as cheese, bread, pastries, meats and vegetables from local suppliers are all available. Buying locally reduces the miles that the food is transported and therefore energy that is used up in getting the food to you. Swansea Market also has some traders selling local produce. Supporting the small scale traders here helps to support the local economy and retain a vibrant part of Swansea's heritage.

Organic Food
Morganics in Rhosilli, Gower is an organic farm producing meat and vegetables. Growing organic means eliminating the use of artificial pesticides, insecticides and fertilisers which not only helps the local wildlife but also helps our health

Home Grown
Swansea Community Farm has an allotment area where local people can learn how to grow their own organic fruit, herbs and veg.
T.O.P.I.C House, The Older Person's Information Centre, also has an allotment where it grows vegetables that are used for social dinners at the Centre.

Ethical
Oxfam in Swansea has a shop on Union Street, which sells a wide variety of Fairtrade products.
The Green Shop at the Environment Centre also sells a range of organic and Fairtrade produce.
