Education and Training (ESDGC)

Increasing our understanding of the world around us and the impact our daily choices have on the environment and other people around the world, both now and in the future, will help us to make decisions for a better and sustainable future for all.

This area of education and learning is called Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) and is a requirement for all education providers in Wales, not just schools and colleges but also higher education, community learning and employment training.

There are many good examples in Swansea of exemplary provision of ESDGC in a range of settings and to a range of audiences.

The Environment Centre is a focal point for environmental education and information in Swansea and the base for Swansea Environmental Education Forum (SEEF), which is a network of ESDGC providers across the region offering a wide range of educational activities and teacher support and resources. The Centre also organises fieldwork activities for schools based at Crymlyn Bog National Nature Reserve.

Gors Community School was the first in Swansea to achieve the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag and subsequently a Platinum Award: the highest award in the programme. Sustainability has been integrated into school life both in and out of the classroom and a pupil-led Eco Club oversees environmental practices in the school and maintains practical measures to save water and energy.

Bishop’s Wood Local Nature Reserve is used by staff of Swansea Council’s Nature Conservation Team and Forest School as the location for high quality environmental education activities for schools, community groups and the general public. Outdoor environmental education activities are also provided by Llys Nini Animal Centre, Penllergare Trust, Swansea Community Farm and WWT National Wetland Centre Wales.

The Down to Earth Project is a local centre for ESDGC offering a range of educational programmes for disaffected young people and hard to reach groups, and training for education and community workers. It also runs courses in traditional and natural building methods.

Ty'r Blodau is a purpose built education and visitor centre sited within Singleton Botanical Gardens and, along with the Brynmill Discovery Centre in the nearby Brynmill Park, provides the base for a programme of educational activities related to horticulture and wildlife.
