From the reuse of waste materials such as cockle shells for pathways to the use of recycled plastic sheeting in the accessible toilet and shower room. They separate a wide range of waste materials to send for recycling or to use in their composting area. The site also has a compost toilet, extensive rainwater harvesting systems and an ecological sewage treatment plant which doesn’t use electricity, has no moving parts and has an on-site soak-away system. Down to Earth also run education programmes with disadvantaged groups making beautiful furniture out of reclaimed wood. The judges commented that the Down to Earth approach is to make dealing with waste and saving energy and water core practices. They said that the enthusiasm of the staff working on the project cannot be doubted and the way it is set up is inspiring. |
