Crwys Community Woodland
Crwys Community Woodland is a wonderful natural green space that sits alongside the sports field in Three Crosses and comprises a range of valuable habitats including wet grassland, woodland and a pond – and attracting a wide diversity of wildlife.
The Environmental Improvements Scheme, coordinated by the village’s Sports Association, started with volunteer work parties carrying out clear-ups and maintaining paths around the site. Having secured funding and support from a number of sources, the community group has been able to upgrade the paths and install accessible boardwalks, seating, a pond dipping platform, picnic benches, new fencing and gates and interpretation panels.
Wildflowers have been planted, habitats have been created or enhanced, and invasive species have been brought under control. Though some heavy work involved contractors, most of the labour came from community volunteers and local groups.
The local primary school now uses the site on a regular basis for Forest School and Eco-club activities. Pupils have helped in bulb planting and constructing a willow sculpture and local guides and brownies helped with wildflower planting.
The project was formally opened last June and received a Rural Wales Award from CPRW. The Sustainable Swansea judges commented that it is great to see so many people involved in creating a wonderful wildlife resource for the whole community to enjoy.
