We have completed our engagement work in the city centre and marina areas. We have been raising awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and working with local people to find solutions.
Some of the things we have done include:
- visiting mother and toddler groups to highlight the benefits of real nappies and the Council's £100 voucher towards the cost of buying real nappies.
- a litter pick around the marina area was arranged in September as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Be Tidy’ campaign. 4 bags of rubbish were removed from the marina and beach area and it received publicity in Evening post both before and after.
- display boards have been up in the central library outlining the various community green maps available in Swansea, explaining their purpose and how they are prepared.
- organising a 'Coffee and cake with the recycling team' event in October where two of the council's recycling team were on hand to answer any questions about recycling. We also had a textile bank at the event and approx. 12 kg of clothing was collected.
- organising an energy efficiency drop-in session for local people to get information. There was lots of advice, chances to ask questions and giveaways from organisations including The Energy Saving Trust's NEST programme, Age Cymru, Communities First as well as local housing providers like Family Housing, Coastal and Gwalia. And of course we, at Sustainable Swansea had a bundle of information available too!
- an art project with Caer Las has recently finished and the result is in an exhibition currently up in the Environment Centre.
- giving talks at various groups such as the Ladies group at Spring Terrace Church in Sandfields, the Council's Housing and Family Housing's Tenant Panel, and....
- delivered a food workshop for the Housing Tenants Panel too
- given two talks to 2nd year students at Gower College - one about sustainability in general and one about clothes and the effects of the industry on the environment....
...on top of that, we've been working on the next Green map - which will be of the central Swansea area. Green maps show sites such as where you can recycle, where you can buy local or organic food, where there are open spaces or play areas, community groups, libraries, nature reserves and so on. See our Green maps page to download a copy or visit the Open Green map website to explore the interactive online version.
