Bishopston Comprehensive SchoolThe ESDGC group in Bishopston Comprehensive School runs a number of clubs and projects to encourage pupils to develop positive attitudes to sustainability including the eco-group, gardening club, recycling teams and the eco-craft club.
An underused part of the school grounds was identified and surveyed a few years ago and has been developed into a growing area with vegetable beds, a polytunnel, seating and feeders to encourage wildlife. The gardening club has been supported by the community who have helped with digging, sowing wildflower seed and planting vegetables. The eco-craft or ragdoll club was established as an action group to tackle the issue of waste. The club makes rag dolls from unwanted materials donated from the community and has also created rag doll kits which were sold to raise funds for local charities. The school has been awarded an Eco-School Green Flag and a bronze award in the Swansea Sustainable Schools Scheme. The school is also one of only four Fairtrade Schools in Swansea. The judges were impressed with the commitment shown by a number of teachers at the school and also the value placed on involving the community and outside organisations. They commented that the school seemed very switched on to sustainability. |
